Ungkapan Keperluan dan Ekspektasi (Harapan)
Modal auxiliary = kata kerja bantu
Aux = Auxiliary
Pada Pertemuan 1 lalu kita membahas sejumlah modal auxiliary yang digunakan dalam expression of necessity and expectations, yaitu:1) must, 2) have to/has to, serta 3) need to.
Modal Aux yang kali
ini dipelajari adalah:
- must = harus
(muncul dari diri sendiri penuturnya)

have
to/ has to = harus (muncul
dari keadaan/ luar penuturnya)
- need = perlu, tapi terasa sebagai keharusan (muncul dari diri
penuturnya)
Contoh:
- You must call him now (Kamu harus meneleponnya sekarang)
- You have to bring your pencil
and eraser when you’re taking an exam (Kamu harus membawa pensil dan penghapus
ketika melaksanakan ujian)

You need to ask for permission to your teacher before leaving the
classroom (Kamu perlu (maksudnya: harus) meminta izin pada
guru sebelum meninggalkan ruang kelas)
Catatan: penggunaan “must”, “have to”/”has
to”, serta “need” bisa saling dipertukarkan. Maksudnya, bisa saja dikatakan
misalnya, “You have to call him now” dengan arti yang sama tapi dengan konteks
berbeda.
Sekarang (pada Pertemuan 2 ini) akan dikenalkan seperti apa Pola Kalimat yang mengandung modal auxiliary, baik yang berpola (+),
(-), maupun (?). Ikuti materinya …

Perhatikan teks berwarna biru (expression of necessity) dan berwarna merah (respons atas expression of necessity) di atas. Itulah expression of necessity berikut tanggapannya. Pelajari, mengapa denikian? Ingat, pola kalimat ada yang berbentuk (+)—seperti tertera dalam boks di atas; namun sebenarnya ada juga yang berbentuk kalimat (-) dan kalimat interogatif (?). Bagaimana, bisa paham, kan?

Karena terlalu panjang. Bagaimana jika dialognya pendek? Misal, dialog di bawah
ini (dua orang, masing-masing ngomong dua kali) diacak dulu susunannya kemudian
kalian diminta mengurutkannya sehingga terbentuk dialog yang sesuai/ logis.
Pasti lebih gampang, kan?
